We have measured the temperature dependencies of the relative elongation and the thermal diffusivity of the Ni 51.4 Mn 26.4 Ga 21.7 alloy in the temperature range from 300 to 700 K. The relative elongation (CTE) shows the anomalous behavior in the temperature range from 420 to 500 K. The different behavior of the relative elongation and the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) was found during the heating and cooling in the thermal cycle. The large increase of the thermal diffusivity was found at about 450 K. Introduction Shape memory alloys are materials with high application potential. They are used especially as actuators or sensors because of their ability to change significantly their shape only by heating above the structural transition temperature. Shape memory (SM) effect is based upon a phase transition with substantional deviatoric component. The microscopic strain associated with such a transformation can then be used to generate macroscopic strains [1; 2]. Ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (FSMAs) are alloys showing a shape memory effect and furthermore they are ferromagnetic. There is another parameter which can tune the properties of these alloys: the magnetic field. Magnetic field can be tuned much faster than temperature therefore faster response can be expected in case of using magnetic field [4]. Larger strains are reached with the FSMAs in comparison with non magnetic SMAs. The shape of the sample of FSMAs can be changed using the magnetic field, if the magnetic anisotropy is large enough. The magnetic domains are superimposed on the twin variants. In each domain, the magnetic moments are aligned along the easy magnetization axis. When the magnetic field is applied, the twin variants with the easy magnetization axis parallel to the magnetic field are preferred. As a result the twin boundaries are moving and we can observe macroscopic change of the shape [5]. The stoichiometric Ni 2 MnGa alloy belongs to a group of Heusler alloys (space group Fm3m, structural type AlMnCu 2, Strukturbericht type L2 1 ) and exhibits a martensitic transformation at temperature M S = 202K [5]. This transition to a tetragonal structure is accompanied by a shape memory effect. The Ni 2 MnGa alloy is ferromagnetic below T C = 376K. In off stoichiometric Ni 2 MnGa alloys the transition temperatures are strongly dependent on the composition [3; 6]. Thermal properties of FSMAs had yet not been studied. The aim of this work is to measure the thermal expansion and the thermal diffusivity of the Ni Mn Ga alloy in the temperature range from 300 K to 700 K. The results will be analysed with respect to magnetic and martensitic phase transitions. Experimental The polycrystalline material with composition Ni 51.4 Mn 26.4 Ga 21.7 has been prepared in Kovohutě Panenské Břežany. This composition was selected in order to shift the transition temperatures above room temperature. The composition of the studied alloy was determined using chemical analysis. The alloy was studied in the as cast and the annealed state. Annealing was performed at 1120K for 96 hours [7]. Thermal expansion was measured using commercial dilatometer Netzsch 402E in the temperature range from 300K to 600K. The sample had a diameter of 6mm and length 50mm. It was measured under the protective Ar atmosphere. Two heating and cooling rates were used: 5K/min and 2K/min. The thermal diffusivity was measured by a flash method. The sample had a diameter of 16mm and thickness 2mm. The measurement was performed under an Ar atmosphere. In this method the sample 507
