1 Lesson 4 Abbreviations a.m., p.m. Abbreviations are letters that stand for a longer word. Many abbreviations begin with capital letters and end with periods. Measurement abbreviations do not have capital letters or periods. in oz cm yd mi Two abbreviations used with time are a.m. and p.m. The letters a.m. stand for morning, the time between midnight and noon. The abbreviation p.m. stands for afternoon and evening, the time between noon and midnight. They do not need capital letters. Put a period after each letter. She is sick. We are happy. Was and were are past tense verbs. They tell about something that has already happened. I was at the store yesterday. They were not at home last evening.
