TERM PLANS SCORE OVER ULIPS AGAIN Term insurance products are back in favour with insurers. The cost of term plans NEWS has come down by 40-50 percent over the past year.a year before, a term plan insurance for a cover of Rs 50 lakh for a person aged 25-30 years attracted a premium of Rs 12,000. The average cost of such a plan is now Rs 6,500-7,000. A term insurance policy provides a stated benefit only upon the holder's death, provided the death occurs within the policy period. There will be no stated benefits if the policy holder out lives the policy period. With the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority cracking a whip on the sale of unit-linked insurance plans, almost all major life insurere have launched a number of new term plans in recent months, to boost their sales and diversity the product portfolio. Examples are aviva life Shield Platinum, ICICI Prudential iprotect, Kotake- Term, Kotake- Preferred Term plan, Met Suraksha Plus, SBI Life Smart Shield and HDFC Term Insurance. Aviva recently introduced three term plans. Term plans constitute 16 percent of its overall portfolio and 40 percent of the traditional protfolio. Another reason for the lower cost is improvement in mortality rates, enabling insurers to issue term policies with longer ternures. "Mortality rates have improved by 10-15 percent over the past few years. This is helping insurers to underwrite policies with higher tenure. Second, due to the same reason, reinsurance rates have also dropped by 20-25 percent over the past one year, which is pushing the cost down," said G.N.Agarwal, Chief Actuary, Future Genereli Life Insurance Co. However, some industry experts believe an overdose of term plans is not ideal, as these address only a part of the risk. According to statistics, only four of 1,000 policy holders dies during the policy period. There are other risks, apart from the life risks, which a term plan fails to cover. New private life insurance players such as Star Union Daiichi, IDBI Federal Life and India First Life is planning to double agent base over the next 12 months to broad-base their out reach and tap more customers. "Bancassurance channel is the most cost-effective channel for selling insurance products. Though this channel is effective to build up initial capacities, in the long run, agency distribution is a must to generate new business," said an industry expert. According to industry estimates, more than 50 per cent of the industry's business comes through agency channel, bancassurance route accounts for nearly 25-30 per cent of the business, while corporate agents, brokers and direct marketing accounts for around 20 per cent of the premiums collected. Bank of India (BoI) and Union Bank of India promoted Start Union Daiichi is recruiting 5,000 agents across 20 centres in the country to diversify its distribution channel. "We need alternate channels outside bancassurance route, so we are planning to build a very strong agency net-work going forward. We have already started this on pilot basis in Bihar and Assam, over the next one year we will recruit 5,000 agents across the country to diversify its distribution channel.'' said K Sahay, MD&CEO Star Union Daiichi Life. "The move to increase the number of agents is in line with our strategy to develop multichannel distribution system. Bancassuranceh has its own advantages, but agency route is most efficient when it comes to reaching the people in rural areas," said P Nandagopal, MD&CEO, India First Life. Players such as SBI Life, ICICI Prudential, HDFC Standard Life, which had a backing of large banks to start with, had slowly build up a strong agency route to sustain the growth in premiums. For instance, SBI Life, the largest private life insurer in the country, have nearly 80,000 agents and agency channel accounts for around 37 per cent of the business. For ICICI Prudential, 50 per cent of the premiums collected comes through agency route and has more than 100,000 agents.
