Alumni Program '05 1 up 5/23/2005 12:09 PM Page 6 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI HALL OF FAME [ áàéüç In the spring of 2001, the Perry Board of Education established The Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame to honor former students of Perry High School whose lives are exemplary for both their career accomplishments and their contributions to the well being of others. They have been selected because they have distinguished themselves in their field of study, career or community service. In addition, these individuals will serve as an inspiration to the students of Perry Public Schools, encouraging them to live their dreams and to pursue personal excellence in all future endeavors. The members of the charter committee of the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame began their work early that year. Their task was to establish the policies and procedures that would guide the future selection of all Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame inductees. These members were nominated by the Board of Education and represented a cross-section of school and community members. After determining the nominating criteria and process, the final task of the Charter Committee was to recommend individuals to serve on the Selection Committee. This committee was also comprised of a diverse cross-section of people including representatives from the Perry Board of Education, the Perry Historical Society, school administration, staff, students, and community. To date, the following individuals have been inducted into the Perry Schools Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame: Ray G. Cicero successfully pursued a career that combines his interests in math and science cultivated during his Perry High School years. Today, this professional electrical engineer is the president of a Cleveland-based consulting engineering firm. He shares his professional skills through projects in hospitals, public and private buildings throughout Northeast Ohio and his enthusiasm for the engineering field with high school students. After graduating from Perry High School in 1983, Cicero attended the University of Akron where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering in 1989. He gained his first professional experience as an electrical engineer at the Kucheman, Peters and Tschantz firm in Akron where his work centered on lighting, power distribution and low voltage communication systems designs for institutional and commercial projects. In 1993, Cicero joined Karpinski Engineering in Cleveland. At this consulting engineering firm, he served as a project engineer, senior project engineer and associate. His technical work required engineering design for large projects, including lighting and low voltage systems. Teamwork and strong communication was central to project success and required close coordination with facilities owners and architects. In order to more fully understand all of the business aspects involved in his work, Cicero enrolled at Cleveland State University where he earned his Masters of Business Administration degree in 1997. 6
Alumni Program '05 1 up 5/23/2005 12:09 PM Page 9 His enriched business knowledge became valuable as Cicero s career at Karpinski Engineering grew. On becoming a partner in the firm in 1998, Cicero s responsibilities expanded to include strategic planning, marketing, project management, human resources and financial management. In 2003, he became the president, adding a professional focus on creating visions for the company and strategic paths for all its areas. As president, he also handles corporate structure, legal issues, banking relationships and public relations for the company whose projects extend throughout Ohio and into Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania and New York. With Karpinski Engineering, Cicero has been involved in significant projects, including construction of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation s cancer center, the Fairview Hospital patient bed tower, Hillcrest Hospital s renovated and expanded west bed tower, and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation s new heart center. His additional project experience includes work done at other hospitals as well as colleges, high schools, and public buildings. Cicero s most memorable project to date remains the renovation of Severance Hall that required extraordinary attention to acoustics and noise factors to enable the Cleveland Orchestra s home to remain a city jewel. Cicero enjoys gaining insight into others fields as he uses his skills across the wide variety of projects. Giving back to the community through service projects is important to Cicero. He has volunteered for Midtown Cleveland, the district that is home to his company s headquarters. He participates in Karpinski Engineering s successful Harvest for Hunger drive that benefits the Cleveland Food Bank as well as in fundraising events and campaigns for Fairview Hospital, Bellevue Hospital, The Cleveland Clinic Foundation and Blufton Regional Medical Center. Cicero volunteers to promote engineering as a career choice for high school students. He has been a presenter at Hudson High School s Career Day and speaks to advanced math classes at Perry High School during the annual National Engineers Week in February. He has continued his own professional education by attending seminars and programs throughout the United States. Cicero received his professional engineering license from the State of Ohio in 1993 and has been active in professional organizations. Currently president of the American Council of Engineering Companies Cleveland Region, he has also served as the treasurer, secretary and a program chair in that organization. He has been a board member of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Ohio s Business Development Committee and a Health Care Committee member of the Cleveland Engineering Society. Cicero is married to Sherri, his high school sweetheart, and the couple has a daughter, Cassy, 8, and a son, Jimmy, 5. A former captain of the football, basketball and tennis teams at Perry High, the Chardon resident shares his athletic skills today as a T-ball coach and soccer coach. He and his wife also supported the Count On Me campaign for Chardon s new athletic facilities. Cicero still enjoys tennis, playing in a men s singles league at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club. 7
