I would first like to tell you that in Japan Bulgaria is widely known with its delicious yogurt and wines. Among others I like in particular musaka, kavarma as well as Rakia and Mavrud wines. Is there any event or personality, which has strongly affected your character? Since when I was young, I used to be very curious about foreign people and their societies, and I wanted to know more about them by myself. In this regard, it was a great enlightenment for me that I could have a chance to study foreign languages in China and in the United States in 1970's. On that day Japanese people show their respect to the Emperor as a symbol of our nation's integration. Hundreds of thousands of Japanese are coming in the yard of the Emperor's Palace in Tokyo to congratulate the Emperor and his family. Usually the Emperor's family is staying on the veranda and greeting the people. Main Japanese TVs and radio stations broadcast the event through whole day. Our diplomatic missions abroad also mark the National day by organizing receptions. This year the Japanese Embassy in Sofia hosted the reception on the occasion of the National day of Japan on December 3, 2002. Representatives from the office of Bulgarian president, representatives of Bulgarian National Assembly, representatives of Ministries and Agencies of the Bulgarian Government and many other dear Bulgarian guests attended our reception. I avail myself of this opportunity to thank to all of them for being together with us on that day. Which is the typical feature or quality with which people from Japan are especially proud? I think that the Japanese people are very proud with their high moral, duty and responsibility, with their etiquette. We may classify those features as traditional ones. On the other hand, I think the Japanese have also been trying to be flexible in promptly responding to the challenges of the ongoing processes of globalization in the world, though the process has been gradual. Your Excellency, are there any common features between the people from Bulgaria and those from Japan? I feel that there are some common characteristics between Bulgarians and Japanese. For example the Japanese and Bulgarian people adore nature and try to live in a harmony with the people, nature and themselves. Another examples is the tolerance of Bulgarian and Japanese people. As you may know, in Japan three main religions - Shinto, Bukkyo /Buddhism/, Christianity and others historically coexist in a harmony. On the other hand, in Bulgaria we witness so called "tolerant ethnic model" that has proved its efficiency during the last 13 years of Bulgarian transition. Another similarity is in the patriarchal type of the Japanese and Bulgarian families with respect to the elderly people and their wisdom. Perhaps, there are many other examples of common characteristics. Do you have any short message to Bulgarian people? I wish to greet all Bulgarians and to wish much health, personal happiness and further prosperity of your beautiful county.
