4th Annual John Varadian Basketball Tournament The 4th annual John Varadian Basketball Tournament, organized by the Armenian Cultural Association of RI, took place this afternoon at the RI School for the Deaf in Providence. Pictured below are the players dressed in red, blue, orange and white shirts with Sarkis Tarpinian centered with Mike Arslanian off to the left and Steve Megridichian off to the right. They and their players made up a majority of the coaches, volunteers and athletes representing their respective churches, Sts. Vartanantz and St. Sahag and St. Mesrob. Arch Priest Gomidas and Der Hayr Shnork offered an opening prayer for the participants. Mrs. Sylvia Varadian received a signed shirt with all the players and coaches names on it and spoke to the crowd of her appreciation of this event reminiscing stories of her late husband John as a basketball referee and football player many years ago. She stated that she would like to donate the shirt to the Armenian museum when a suitable place is found to display such items. Her family paid for all the shirts, other donations were from Sonia's, the Ayrassian family and Ronzio Pizza. There was a draft of all the players and for close to three hours, those from the community that were there in attendance were entertained by the healthy competition. The picture was taken by Berge Zobian, photographer. Steve Elmasian

For my Father s will is that everyone who looks to the Son, and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. At this time the Jews began to grumble about him because he said, I am the bread that came down from heaven. They said, Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, I came down from heaven? Stop grumbling among yourselves, Jesus answered. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets: They will all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life. (On Page 1056 in your Bible.) EPISTLE 2 Timothy 2:15-19 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenasus and Philetus, who have wandered away from
the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some. Nevertheless, God s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: The Lord knows those who are his, and, Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness. Sunday, March 2, 2014 Vartanantz Celebration Under the auspices of His Eminence, Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan Visit our website for updated Church news http://www.stsvartanantzchurch.org From the January 30th issue of Crossroads CATHOLICOS ARAM STRESSES REVIVAL OF THE ARMENIAN COMMUNITY IN SYRIA AS PRIORITY FOR ALL His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Holy See of Cilicia, said that the revival of the Armenian community in Syria must be a priority for all Armenians. In his sermon on Christmas day at the Cathedral of St. Gregory the Illuminator in Antelias, Lebanon, that was telecast worldwide, His Holiness spoke on the theme of peace, specifically emphasizing the message of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, through his parables and his blessing of the peacemakers. The Catholicos said, The peace of Jesus was built on justice and mutual love, and the Church is called to make peace the core of its vocation. Catholicos Aram spoke of the suffering in Syria, and told the faithful, We must go beyond thinking and praying for the suffering Armenian community. We must help them materially until the day when they recover for the current tragedy and rebuild their lives. The Fund for Syrian Armenian Relief is continuing its efforts to help sustain the beleaguered Syrian Armenian community. The Fund has already remitted $400,000 for humanitarian aid to the people. Please help us continue this sacred duty. Donations to the FUND for SYRIAN ARMENIAN RELIEF can be made on line ----- www.armenianprelacy.org and select Syrian Armenian Relief in the menu. ST. GREGORY THE THEOLOGIAN This Saturday, February 1, the Armenian Church celebrates the Feast of St. Gregory the Theologian, also known as Gregory of Nazianzus, who is considered to be one of the four great doctors of the Church during the fourth century, along with Basil the Great, John Chrysostom, and Athanasius the Great. He served as Archbishop of Constantinople and he is noted for being an accomplished and eloquent speaker. He is described as a classically trained speaker and philosopher and the most accomplished thetorical stylist of the
patristic age. He is also known as one of the Cappadocian Fathers, along with Basil the Great and Gregory of Nyssa. Some of his sermon s and poetry have survived. ************************************************************* PRELACY PUBLICATIONS The Prelacy recently published Archbishop Zareh Aznavorian s monumental Commentary on the Nicene Creed in a bilingual English and Armenian edition. The English translation was prepared by Deacon Shant Kazanjian, executive director of the Prelacy s Armenian Religious Education Council (AREC). This important work is based on a series of lectures delivered by Archbishop Zareh, of blessed memory, and was published in Armenian in Aleppo in 2008. This important work explains the Nicene Creed line by line, word by word, in accordance to the orthodox faith; it presents the beliefs of the Christian faith that are essential for every believer. Each theological and biblical term is carefully examined and compared. Copies of this monumental edition are available for purchase from the Church Office. Cost is $15 per copy. Also available are copies of the newly published "Historical Atlas of Armenia". Cost of the Atlas is $40 per copy. This bilingual atlas is truly a "new atlas for a new generation" and has been published on the 500th anniversary of Armenian printing, with the sponsorship of the Hagopian family of Providence and in memory of Yervant and Serpouhi Hagopian. Either or both of these publications would make excellent addition to anyone s library. Winter and Inclement Weather is upon us! Please remember to check for our cancellations.
