Vartanantz Church Men's Club Presentation of the Souren Mouradjian Awards Der Hayr, ArchDeacon Souren Mouradjian and Men's Club Treasurer, Stephen Elmasian with Award recipients Nareg Mkrtschjan, Harout Tashian, Alexandra and Michelle Colangelo, and Alyssa Rueb. The 6th annual Souren Mouradjian Awards were presented following church services on Sunday at a Fellowship Hour hosted by the Men's Club. Receiving the awards this year were as follows: Alexandrea Elena Colangelo, Michelle Julie Colangelo, Eric John Pjojian, Alexan Kacheg Topalian, Harout Dickran Tashian, Nareg Armenag Mkrtschjan, Shant Pierre Eghian, and Alyssa Elizabeth Rueb. All 8 of this year's high school seniors have impressive resumes and will be heading off to their institutions of higher learning with solid foundations in their education and sense of community. Each student that was present received a plaque from Mr. Mouradjian who has been serving our church for close to 70 years, mostly as the choir director. The main criteria for the award is that the student must participate in an arts related activity. Each student was also presented with a 3 x 5 foot Armenian flag, donated by the Providence ARF, so they can display it in their college dorm rooms. Congratulations to these deserving students whose names will all be inscribed on the permanent plaque in Fermanian Hall.

3 On another note, about 3 to 4 times a year, the Men's Club prepares dinner for the homeless at the Providence Mission located in the heart of South Providence, Tonight we hosted a cookout which included hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, coleslaw and baked beans. A kind of meal that we all would take for granted and could put together with little notice at our homes. The offers of thanks were plenty, but one man seemed to say it best, when he approached the guys at the grill after eating and said, "That was the best burger I have had since moving to RI". A family of 6 ate first and then close to 150 people including volunteers then had dinner. A most rewarding time for all, those in need and the workers too. He answered, A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one

4 greater than Jonah is here. The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon s wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here. When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, I will return to the house I left. When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation. (On page 967 in your Bible) EPISTLE Romans 7:25-8:11 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin. Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit. Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God s law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. 8 From the July 3rd issue of Crossroads DISCOVERY OF RELICS OF ST. GREGORY This Saturday, July 5, the Armenian Church observes one of the three feast days dedicated to St. Gregory the Illuminator (Krikor Lousavorich): the discovery of his relics. St. Gregory is considered to be the Apostle of Armenia, and the patron saint of the Armenian Church. He preached throughout Armenia, built churches, including the great cathedral in Etchmiadzin, established the first canon laws, wrote many prayers, and organized the liturgical services. After years of evangelizing, St. Gregory sought solitude and an ascetic life. He retired to a cave at Mount Sepouh where he died in solitude. Shepherds found his body and without realizing his identity they buried him under a pile of stones. Later a hermit, Garnik of Pasen, who was a disciple of St. Gregory, saw a vision and went to Mount Sepouh and found the burial site. He took the saint s remains to the village of Tordan for burial where King Trtad was buried. Relics from the right hand of St. Gregory, encased in a golden arm, are at the Holy Mother See of Etchmiadzin and the Holy See of Cilicia. The Catholicoi mix the new Muron (Holy Chrism) with the old Muron with the golden hand of St. Gregory. ST. DANIEL THE PROPHET AND COMPANIONS SHADRACH, MESHACH, & ABEDNEGO This Tuesday, July 8, the Armenian Church commemorates Daniel the Prophet and his companions. Daniel and his youthful companions, Shadrach, Meshach, & Abednego, found favor with the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar after their captivity. When the king gave orders for a large statue of himself that would be worshipped like a god, Daniel and the three youths refused. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were put into a large furnace. The flames shot out of the furnace and attacked those standing nearby, but the three young boys walked in the flames without harm. Seeing this, the king ordered their release from the furnace, and he became a convert to the True God. (See the Book of Daniel, chapters 1 to 3 for the full account).
