Improving Water Resistance Effi ciency of the Earth Building Wall by Natural Coating Materials Narathip Thubthun E-mail : arch.11007@gmail.com 1 2-3 4 : 6, 3 : 7 2 : 8 3 3 1 1 2 Abstract This research project is an experimental study and testing to develop formulas for suitable earth wall coating and earth wall fi nishing materials that allow for better wall rigidity and water resistance to rainfall while indoor humidity can still fl ow through the walls. The research found that the suitable formula for the primary earth wall coating was 1 part soil and 2-3 parts paddy husk. This formula yielded high coating rigidity with no cracking. Three mixtures of exterior wall coating materials, clay : sand were prepared and tested at the ratios of 4:6, 3:7 and 2:8. When bonding agents were added to all three mixtures at a ratio of 3 parts exterior wall coating and 1 part bonding agent, the wall rigidity improved. The bonding agent that had signifi cant wall rigidity improvement was Tung oil, followed by starches made from rice fl our, glutinous rice fl our and tapioca fl our respectively. One application of Tung oil or linseed oil coating over the exterior wall coating considerably improved water resistance capability of the earth walls. At least two applications of lard, soybean oil or sunfl ower oil are needed to improve water resistance capability of the wall coating materials. : Keywords : Earth Building, Earth Wall Coating Material, Waterproof
